In my time on the city council, I’ve built a reputation for carefully weighing the costs and benefits of every ask before our community. I believe in fiscal restraint, and I’ve said no when the proposal didn’t justify the burden. That’s why I want to be clear about this school levy: it’s not a new tax. It’s the renewal of a critical commitment we’ve upheld for decades to fill the gap left by state funding.

My wife Torie and I are supporting this as parents of two young children, but also as citizens who want Anacortes to remain a dynamic, attractive place to live and work. Our excellent schools are a cornerstone of that. They are a primary reason doctors, nurses, and young families choose to put down roots here. This levy protects the programs, staff, and safe facilities that make that excellence possible. Letting it lapse would mean real cuts—larger classes, fewer opportunities—and that’s a step backward we can’t afford.

I understand that everyone must make the choice that’s best for their family’s budget. For ours, ensuring our schools have the stable funding to continue serving every child is a priority we’re willing to support. It’s an investment in our kids’ potential and in the enduring strength of our community.
